Self tan doesn't wash off — it fades as your skin naturally renews itself. The DHA in self tanner reacts with dead skin cells on your body's surface. As those cells shed through your natural skin cycle (roughly every 7–14 days), the colour gradually fades with them.

On average, a well-applied self tan lasts 5–7 days before noticeable fading begins. With proper care, you can extend that to 10 days or more.

What Affects How Long Your Tan Lasts

Skin Type

Oily skin tends to shed cells faster, meaning tans fade more quickly. Dry skin holds tan longer, but can develop patchily if not properly moisturised. Normal to combination skin typically gets the best longevity.

Pre-Tan Preparation

This is the single biggest factor. Thorough exfoliation before application removes old, loose skin cells and gives the DHA a fresh, even surface to bond with. Skip this step and your tan will fade unevenly within 3–4 days.

Water Exposure

Swimming, long hot baths, and excessive sweating all accelerate fading. Chlorinated pools are especially harsh on self tan. If you're a swimmer, expect your tan to last about half as long.

Product Quality

Exfoliate thoroughly 24 hours before application. Moisturise daily with an oil-free lotion — hydrated skin sheds more slowly. Pat dry after showering instead of rubbing. Avoid long, hot showers. Skip the swimming pool for the first 24 hours. Use a gradual tanning moisturiser between full applications to maintain colour. Avoid oil-based body products, which break down DHA. And when it's time for a top-up, lightly exfoliate before reapplying rather than layering over old tan.
