How to Self Tan Your Back Without Help
The Back Problem
It's the number one complaint about at-home self tanning: "I can't reach my back." Fair point. Your back is the largest area you can't see or easily reach, and it's also one of the most visible — especially in backless dresses, swimsuits, or at the beach. But it's absolutely possible to self tan your back alone. Here's how.
Method 1: The Back Applicator
A back applicator is a flat pad on a long handle, similar to a back scrubber. Apply mousse to the pad, then sweep it across your back in long, overlapping strokes. Start from the bottom and work upward. These are available at most beauty retailers and cost under $15.
Method 2: The Plastic Wrap Technique
This is the most popular DIY method and costs nothing. Lay a long piece of plastic wrap on a flat surface. Spread mousse evenly along it using a mitt. Then hold one end in each hand and rub it across your back in a shoeshine motion — back and forth, moving from lower back to shoulders. The mousse transfers evenly from the wrap to your skin.
Method 3: The Tanning Mitt Extension
Put your tanning mitt on and apply mousse to it. Then reach behind your back, alternating arms — right hand for left side, left hand for right side. You can reach more than you think. Use a mirror to check for missed spots. This works best if you're reasonably flexible.
Method 4: The Wall Technique
Apply mousse to a tanning mitt, then press the mitt against a smooth wall (like a tiled bathroom wall). Lean back against it and move up and down and side to side. The wall provides the pressure and even distribution that your arms can't. Clean the wall afterward.
Method 5: Use a Clear Formula
Australian Glow's Clear Mousse is invisible on application — no guide colour. This means even if your coverage isn't perfectly even, you won't see any patches or streaks as the tan develops. The DHA distributes and develops evenly regardless. It's the most forgiving option for solo back tanning.
Pro Tips
Whatever method you use, apply your back first before the rest of your body — you'll have the most energy and patience for the hardest part. Use a mirror to check coverage before the tan develops. And don't stress about perfection — most people can't see their own back closely, and a slightly uneven back tan is virtually invisible in real life.
